The Left Heart

Freshly oxygenated blood returns to the left heart via the pulmonary veins, which empty, into the left atrium. Flow then proceeds form the left atrium through the mitral valve to the left ventricle during diastole. In systole, the left ventricle pumps blood through the aortic valve into the systemic circulation.
