18th Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition on November 16, 2006
We won the competition! The following is the basic information about our bridge:
Name: Pinche Qiao (First part means "Buddy" in Spanish, second part is the "Bridge" in Chinese. We choose this name due to my teammate is from Mexico and speaks Spanish, and I of course comes from China).
Weight:164 gram.
Number of popsicles: 100 pieces.
Load carried: 1154 Newton.
Time spent: about 10 hours including preparation, drawing, layout and glue together. Also we used the Strut-and-Tie model to analysis the bridge to decide where we need to put more popsicles, and finally we used S-Frame to predict the load 83kg (about 813 Newton, not so close to the real final failure load around 30% lower.)
We won the hight load, also the highest load/weight ratio, out of total 34 bridges However, as graduate students, we are only qualified in one category, the graduate prize, which is a much lower prizes than those in the undergraduate level. Sigh!
We have lots of fun anyway. Cheers!
