Table 3.S Numbering the Commandments in Post-Biblical Traditions
While each religious community has ten commandments, the tradition of numbering the commandments differs from one to the next. The traditional Jewish division finds the first commandment in verse 2: "I am YHWH your Elohim." and joins verses 3 and 4 into the second commandment. Some Christian traditions begins numbering the commandments with verse 3, so the first commandment is "You may not have any other gods except me." The Roman Catholic and Lutheran branchs of Christianity combine the "no other gods" and "no images" statements into one commandment and divide the coveting commandment into two parts: commandment 9 is "you shall not covet your neighbor's house" and commandment 10 is "you shall not covet your neighbor's wife."
