I have introduced the chinese new year for my boy's first grader:

1. tell kids what day the chinese new year is. tell them it is as important as christmas and new year for them.
2. got a lot dumpling from Costco for children. for our northen chinese, they ate them in new year eve. like them eating turkey and ham

3. bought 30 red envelopes from chinese grocery store and put a quarter in each one. one envelope for each kid. explain why

4. I have brought a chinese map and a world map to show them how big china is and how far it is from US.
