Chapter 5 I Didn’t Cry
(115)
I played with the cute baby.
Mom had to go and cook.
After a few minutes,
The baby had a tired look.
(116)
The adorable baby
Was put to bed in her room.
Suddenly, I felt very bored,
Standing like a silly broom.
(117)
It seemed that the bad feeling
Was worse than bored a lot.
Maybe, it’s called loneliness.
Adults often use this word, I thought.
(118)
Then, I heard pleasant music
That I couldn’t ignore.
For the second time that day,
I began to explore.
(119)
I followed the music
Up to the living room.
It was warm, bright, fancy
And smelled of sweet perfume.
(120)
The living room was beautiful
And all the furniture was new.
A person was watching TV.
He was the young man, I knew.
(121)
He picked my family up
At the airport yesterday.
A big dog lay by him, glaring,
As if I were some sort of prey.
(122)
The man was the owner of this house.
Yesterday, my mom had told me,
“Although the basement was ugly,
We have to pay him a large fee.”
(123)
He rented each basement room
At a very high price per day
To newcomers like my family
As a temporary place to stay.
(124)
He was doing a kind of business.
He is a very “smart” man.
He also made a lot money,
By sending people with his van.
(125)
Like most other immigrant families,
We knew no one here and were nervous.
My dad had to pay him a lot
For the room and his kind of service.
(126)
I found a big urn on a table.
I cautiously paused a bit.
But I’m a curious young girl
So quickly I went up to see it.
(127)
On the front part of the urn,
A girl statue held a pot.
Water kept falling from it.
My curiosity was caught.
(128)
The water fell into the urn.
Where did it come from and where did it go?
Why didn’t it overflow the urn?
I really, really wanted to know.
(129)
The falling water, I couldn’t help
Stretching one of my fingers to feel.
It was a bit cool but very smooth.
I wondered if the water was real.
(130)
The music suddenly stopped.
That really gave me a scare.
I looked at the young man.
He threw me an angry stare.
(131)
He shouted loudly at me.
His voice quivered in the air.
“Little girl, don’t touch anything!
Go back to the basement and stay there!”
(132)
The dog’s tail angrily shook.
He stood up and then came at me.
I felt so terrified
That at once, I started to flee.
(133)
In a hurry, mistaking a step,
I rolled down the stairs from up high.
Accidentally, my shoe fell off.
My foot was sore but I didn’t cry.
