How to verify the applicant's work place? or if the ref is real?

Answer: Call the company / reference, ask "I was told xxx's salary was xxx,000, can you confirm that?", here the xxx,000 is a number that you know is impossible.

If the answer is "Yes", you know it is a fake reference, don't accept the applicant.
