How About Having an American Mom?

I have written before that cooking for the three Americans in my family is always a headache for me. Except for a few things they all have different tastes and the two kids are not so fond of Chinese food and are really reluctant to try new things.

What's even worse is that sometimes you cook the food they have had and liked before but for some reason they tell you they don't like it anymore on a particular day. Today is one of those frustrating days for me.

Seeing neither Olivia nor Evan eating much during lunch, I sighed and kind of joked to them: "Well, none of you guys are eating the food I cook. Maybe you should have an American mom instead of me in this house, then you guys probably will be very happy that you don't have to eat Chinese food anymore."

Thinking I was being serious and worried that I was going to leave, "Mommy's boy" Evan immediately frowned his eyebrows which made me realize that was a bad joke I shouldn't have made.

"No! I don't want an American mom! You are a good mom, I want you to stay in our house!" Evan said.

"Did you say I am a good mom? But you don't even like the food I cook for you." I was very happy to hear that he thought I was a good mom but wanted to know why he thought so.

"Yeah, Evan, why do you think Mommy is a good mom?" Daddy asked him too.

"Because she looks good!!!"  Evan answered.

Huh??? I laughed to myself. Daddy couldn't help but bend down his head and laugh to himself too.

"But an American mom can look good too." I was being "cruel" hoping that was not the only reason he thought I was a good mom.

"No! I don't want an American Mom! You look pretty and I love you! I want you to stay in my house!" Evan made it very clear.

"Awww…how sweet!" Olivia stood up from her chair, gave Evan a hug and then pushed him towards me.

"Mommy, give your son a kiss, he is so sweet!" she "ordered".

While I was giving Evan a hug and a kiss telling him that I love him and I will always be his mom in our family, I told myself not to joke about this kind of thing anymore in the future as it may hurt the feelings of my children.

I have a feeling that instead of the physical look, Evan's "look good" comment encompasses rather his affection towards his loved ones as he also mentioned that Olivia and Daddy "look good".

P.S.  Daddy has always been "jealous" of Evan's love towards meJ and he predicts that when they grow up, Olivia will probably marry a white guy and Evan an Asian girl so we may end up paying two weddings. At this point I have to say that I totally agreeJ.
