是啊,近来常收到老同学的e-mails. 都像吃了炸药似的. They kept sending me the link to “Petition against CNN”. I am not sure it is proper to post it here, so I sent an e-mail to a few people in this group for advice.
I was just convinced by the reply that we should not be involved into those controversial reports on Tibet and now the Olympics. But this thread is getting me all excited again …
Olympics is not just the rich's game. It belongs to the whole world. It is an opportunity for people of the world to get together. It has stopped war in the ancient times.
The western world is acting like a jerk. They do not want to see China rising and they try to break down China like they did to USSR.
Go China, Go!

Poor Chinese! Your client was absolutely right. China is not qualified to host Olympics. It is all for "mian zi". Why would Chinese government even care about how the rest of the world thinks of China? Not to mention hosting Olympics would not change a bit of how they think! What would really change how they think is to show them how Chinese government has improved people's life in China. Why don’t they use the money for Olympics on education, welfare, transportation and so forth that would truly matter to Chinese’ daily life? Perhaps instead of claming “China is so strong”, show the rest of the world (If they care to know. As far as I know, most Americans could care less about other countries) proof of improvements on every single aspect of Chinese people’s life. It would be more convincing to others that Chinese could protest in front of Tian An Men square in stead of just Jia Le Fu Super Store; and people on country side are no longer living under horrible condition, etc…. (Have you ever seen pictures of some villages in China? How do you expect any westerns to agree that China is qualified to host Olympics if they see how people live in those villages? We are not talking about one or two. There are so many places like that in China!). There are so many things that Chinese government could do with the money they spent on Olympics. With that amount of money, can you imagine how many village kids could go to school; how many people under the poverty line could get help; how many people with illnesses could be treated? Instead, we get a short period of fake prosperity which is very costly and temporarily in only one city in China! Nonetheless, I do wish that China has a successful Olympics since it is already on the track. However, we all know that it is going to be a long journey to change what other countries think about China. Hopefully, Chinese government can be more practical and realistic about the “mian zi”. O.K. I know I now might hear screaming from some people who read this posting. If you are not mature enough to handle different opinions, then get lost! Sorry about posting in English, not for showing off, just don’t have Chinese software on the work machine.
