Dear xxx, Thank you for your note. We have received many phone calls and emails today on this subject and have removed the cartoon from the web site.
I very much regret that people have taken offense about the cartoon, or believe — wrongly — that Jeff does not care about the suffering in China. To the contrary, Jeff cares deeply, and it was from that impulse that he drew the cartoon in the first place. But he realizes now that he caused great hurt by using a natural disaster to make a political point.
You have my personal apology that you and many others were upset by this matter. Please know that we take your complaints very seriously.
The publication of Darcy cartoon shows the newspaper's lack of human decency.
Typo--Re: "The publication is Darcy cartoon shows the newspaper's lack of human decency."
In fact, Darcy cartoon hurt not only Chinese people, but also himself and the newspaper--his bias hurt his own creditability.

Here is the response I received.
Dear XX,
As our readers will see in a note that will run in the paper tomorrow, The Plain Dealer deeply regrets that some of our readers were offended by the May 14 editorial cartoon relating to the earthquake in China.
It is not true that Jeff Darcy does not care about the suffering in China. To the contrary, he cares deeply, and it was from that impulse that he drew the cartoon in the first place. But he realizes now that he caused great hurt to some by using a natural disaster to make a political point.
We take seriously the reaction of our readers. The cartoon many viewed as offensive has also been removed from Cleveland.com, the newspaper's web site.
Thank you for writing.

Jeff:
The depiction (the rat, earthquake, and Dalai) you made indicated that 1) you are very ignorant and do not know what's shame; 2)you are not a human being.

It's a stab in the back to Chinese who are heart and soul on the rescue and relief of the sufferings from the natural disaster of the 5-12-08 earthquake and there is no room to attend what the Dalai Lama or anyone else is doing/thinking. Jeff Darcy put his words into the mouth of other people (China) which is fabricating (making and spreading rumors), and this is totally against the ethics of journalism. His cartoon reveals his callous lack of human decency. The publication is Darcy cartoon shows the newspaper's lack of human decency.
Susan Goldberg's apology is hardly acceptable if she does not recognize this fact.
what I wrote to the author
"I feel sorry for you, and am shamed to be a fellow
human being with you. You are such a cold blood liar.
I am actually speechless about the thing you did. You
are such a devil. Shame on you."
