Many Americans have trouble celebrating China's Olympics. They worry about China's influence, military, economy and human rights record. We should be concerned about our not effectively competing with China in the Olympics as well as economically. We should be as pro-Western and competitive in our dealings with them as they are pro-Chinese and competitive in their dealings with us. But we should not insist that China will turn into a liberal democracy. We need to recognize that so-called "human rights" are really a Western concept.
As the Olympics start those who believe in universal human rights will start protesting of China. They will basically be saying that the entire world must adopt Western standards of right and wrong. It seems to us that our ways are undeniably right for the whole world, but remember that China's GDP quadrupled between 1978 and 1992. It has since been growing faster. Think about that when we, with our huge trade deficits, tell China how to live. They may have reason to suspect that heavy rights for criminals, high school student empowerment and freedom of the media lead to victory.
We are a young nation. Asian - American students comprise 50 percent or more of the student body at numerous universities. Perhaps we have something to learn. If we continue to confuse liberty and licence, the right to be responsible in numerous ways with the right to party without consequence, we may not be around as long as China. Rather than telling other cultures that they must be like us, we can best secure liberty by telling our current population that they must be more like our forefathers. They always understood that liberty is not sustainable without responsibility. Before we tell other nations how to live, we should make sure of our own standing.
The Olympics should teach us something: it is a competitive world. Teams that do not accept discipline from their coaches are at a disadvantage. Teams that will allow you to play regardless of how many practices you miss will fail. Teams on which the members do not really care if they win or not will not prosper. Human rights activists are globalists and multiculturalists tell us that we have no core culture - both undermine our sense of team. We do not gain by decrying China for knowing it is a sovereign nation with a different culture. Culturists say we should enjoy the Olympics and learn from China. We should rally for our team, instead of decrying theirs.

I am a medical researcher at Harvard Medical School. While all of us are enjoying and appreciating one of the best Olympic Games in history hosted by our motherland, Boston Metro newspaper with a large readership in the city went a great length to slander and sabotage our game efforts. Last Friday morning, right before the opening ceremony, the cover story in the Metro newspaper painted a two-faced image of China in preparations for the coming Olympic Games, criticizing China ranging everything from issues involving human rights, corruption, and Tibet… Not a single positive aspect was mentioned about the great efforts the Chinese people and government dedicated to the games. However, the performance of the opening ceremony was just jaw-dropping. Every one of my American colleagues who watched the opening ceremony really enjoyed and says highly of the opening ceremony performance. However, Boston Metro newspaper didn’t say anything about it, either good or bad for 6 days in a row. I thought the Metro paper probably would say nothing more to slander our motherland. Today on August 15th 2008, I was outraged by the Metro newspaper’s cover story about the Olympic Games in Beijing. This time the Metro paper, not much about politics as it did last Friday, but purely attacked the opening ceremony and the organization of the Olympic Games. The criticisms range from fake fireworks, lip-synched 7-year-old, athletes with faked ages, and faked supporters paid to attend. Again, not a single comment is on the positive side. You may wonder why the news coverage from the Boston Metro consistently mistreated all the Chinese efforts dedicated to the games. If I were someone who knew nothing about China, I would have thought China were such an ugly monster instead of knowing the truth. I highly suspect the insidious motivation behind the coverage of the Olympic Games in Beijing by Boston Metro newspaper. At least, it mounted to no respect to all the Chinese people.

有道理,这不就达到了不战而屈人之兵了吗?
你看看这段WASHINGTON POST的话:
What China did last Friday was entrancing, but its cuddly capitalist-Leninism, already much beloved by our major banks and corporations for its low-wage efficiency, poses a genuine economic challenge to the messier, unsynchronized workings of democracies. A nation that can assemble 2,000 perfectly synchronized drummers has clearly staked its claim as the world's assembly line.

The mayor of Copenhagen, Ritt Bjerregaard, said Thursday during a visit to Beijing, "after the Games in Athens four years ago many thought" of Copenhagen as host city of an Olympic Games, "but after what I have seen here in Beijing, I have to say it is out of the question".
The mayor told the online edition of Politiken, "this is so big and so well-planned that neither Copenhagen or Denmark can carry out something similar.
The Olympic Games are simply an event that are too big for a country of fivemillion inhabitants".Copenhagen is hosting an IOC Congress next year where the 2016 host city will be selected.

Beautiful.. just that.. nothing else.. beautiful.. China did it very well indeed.. the best Opening Ceremony ever to happen on an Olympic...
Well its understandable.. China is the richest country in terms of foreign reserves on planet earth..
They have 1,5 Trillion USDollars in reserves...
Spending 50 billion on an olympic barely makes a dent on China's huge and fat savings piggy bank..

We'll make this look like a children's party in 4 years time - we're GREAT Britain - you don't hear anyone calling it "Great China" - although they do have that Great Wall...
