1. How was BEM’s drop help a little girl.
It was 1970, BEM’s travel in time has led him into a northern town in China. On a street, BEM saw many kids fighting for something on the ground behind a horse cart. The driver was laughing. Driven by his curiosity, BEM walked towards those kids to find out what was going on. To his surprise, these children were struggling for pieces of horse poop. BEM asked them why. One little girl was pushed out of the crowds told him the story.
She told BEM her name was Little Ice. At that time, during winter, each school would ask its pupils to collect all kinds of feces as fertilizer which can be used to trade with farmers at suburb for their farm products. For little children, it was a difficult chore to collect a minimum of 200 kg of shit as required. In order to full fill one of their duties as students, they had to save their poop and collect more anywhere they could find them. Some kids were lucky for their family might had some animals at home like pigs, dogs, or hens, geese, ducks, etc. for some extra poop. Those who were not lucky and did not have livestock had to depend on the poop they “make”. It was very cold at winter in this northern town of China. However, shit was very demanded. Those little kids would poop each night at their family’s small yards or back door sides with their butts exposed in the cold air. Next morning the poop would be frozen, then they saved them in a basket. Most of the time for the 3-month long winter vacation, the banking of shits was far less than the demanded quantity. Even worse, the shit basket was stolen often by shit thefts. In that case, some of these poor kids rather go to street bag for horse shit from the driver of horse cart, than back to school with empty hands because incompletion of their winter vacation commission would very shameful. Some mean teacher might humiliate these losers publicly. At that time you could see many horse cart drivers proudly standing on their horse cart because so many kids would follow them and ask for the horse shit that were collected in a special bag that hung under the labor horses‘ butts‘. The drivers acted cruelly and decided which kid was rewarded with more shit and which less. Sometimes they would even drop the horse poop onto the street letting all those kids follow behind their horse carts to struggle for it. Watching those poor little creatures fighting for their horse drops, they would laugh with satisfaction.
BEM felt very sorry for Little Ice after hearing her story. So he decided to help her. He ate lot of food that day and dropped a huge poop so large that the small front yard of her house was totally blocked. Little Ice had to asked her dad to help. They together came out of their house by back door because front was frizzed and collected BEM’s big shit all day long starting from early next morning. For all her outstanding contribution at the winter vacation, little ice was selected as the student of the year by her school.
