there are strict guidelines about how to work up lung nodules and those guidelines are from large evident based studies.
if the patient meets the criteria, she should have open lung biopsy to have final diagnosis because the risk of not treating a lung cancer is balanced over the risk of a open lung biopsy.
like our great philospher Confucius said: 学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆, as your colleague, i practiced both in china and US, i do believe, seeing more patients but not having a well organized evident based guidelines, does not bring any benifit to the patient. the last thing a physician or a patient wants, is missing a fatal diagnosis simply base on one's "experience".
