Canton/> Does Not Mean War With Japan
BUT WANTS NANKING/> TO RESIST ENCROACHMENT
CANTON/>/>, Saturday. Following a reported declaration of war against Japan/> by Canton/>, it is officially explained that the dramatic mobilisation order against Japan/>/> was merely a warning to the southern commanders to be in readiness. Actually the Cantonese authorities appealed to the Nanking Government to resist the invader by self-defence and not to wage war.
Observers interpret this as a shrewd move to force the hand of General Chiang Kai-shek.
European observers consider that though war with Japan/>/> may be necessary to stop her ruthless aggression, and though the, Nanking Government has been rearming for many months, the Chinese forces are rotten with regionalism and feuds between rival generals, and there is little hope of success without foreign aid.
The correspondent of "The Times" at Hong Kong says: "The southern leaders are essaying to force the issue as a result of the split during the rapprochement talks "when Chou Lou urged peace with Nanking, partly because he desired a United national front, and also because it was arranged last year substantially to subsidise the Canton University, of which he is chancellor.
Kwantung is lukewarm regarding challenging Nanking/>. General Pei Chung-hsi, Kwangsi's war lord, is strongly opposed to surrender to Nanking, using the hatred of Japan/>/> as a weapon against General Chiang Kai-shek. There is an additional grievance against General Chiang Kai-shek, as Nanking/> has diverted the opium trade, causing Kwangsi serious losses.
