As fifteen years passed, who were be able to see the wound?
International community saw.
In 1994, I was a teacher in the department of Sinology at the University of Heidelberg. In that year, the number of graduate student enrollments dropped to so low that there was almost no enough student body for classes. We felt puzzled. After weighing a few factors, we figured it out: the incoming graduate student in 1994 most probably started college in 1989 or 1990. After the Tiananmen massacre, the department of Sinology nearly failed to enroll any students. The disappointment and resentment to China turned European students away from Sinology.
In the past 15 years, have Europeans forgotten “June 4th”? Have China's market, and the "rise" of power because of such a market, won respect over the world? Accompanying the leaders’ overseas trips, the Chinese television cameras let the people see, for example, their leaders receive red-carpet treatment from French president, but the scenes of outcry at China's human rights from the French cultural, intellectual, civilian groups were deleted. All the governments have come to China to compete for the market share, but respect? Sorry, no one will respect the market; Not matter how practical and how brutal the world seems to be, the key to win respect from international community is still the power of one nation’s civilization and moral values, not market or military power. These days the United States lost respect from the great portion of the people over the world. It’s not because the fall of its strength; instead, it is because of its moral stance after the exposure of the prisoner abuse incident. If China wants to win the respect deserved to a great country, the key is not the size of her market, territory or population, but rather its moral responsibility.
"June 4th" led to China's moral bankruptcy.
Among the ones who don’t forge the wound are people in Taiwan, as well as Hong Kong.
The Chinese Communist leaders must have asked themselves: Why doesn’t the “national fundamental doctrine” of "blood is thicker than water" allure the people in Taiwan? Why do Hong Kong people remain aloof after receiving tremendous favors? Are the leaders willing to face this: the resistance of people in Taiwan, and the struggle from the people in Hong Kong are tightly related to the moral bankruptcy after “June 4th”.
For the people in Hong Kong, the favors granted today can be the threat of recalling in tomorrow. Doesn’t the panic caused the 23 clauses have nothing to do with the bloody memories of “June 4th”? To the people in Taiwan, what other feeling can they have-- except fears and distrust, while listening to a regime who fire at its own people talk about the “national fundamental doctrine” of "blood is thicker than water".
"June 4th" massacre represents the power of brutality, the loss of sensibility, and the fall of humanity. As long as it is not redressed, it is carved on government's forehead. Wearing such a political Scarlett letter tattooed on the face, how can you talk about “reunification” and “patriotic”? Simply put, how can you win trust from people? It may not be fair for the new reform-oriented leaders, but the political responsibility requires “all-inclusive acceptance”, doesn’t it?
If people think that "June 4th" is that only a cause for the handful exile, "good-for-nothing" pro-democracy elements, and it doesn’t matter, they are really wrong. Whether or not to redress “June 4th” is a polygraph to the conscience, a touchstone to the morality. Moreover, it is a road block to the political reconciliation across Taiwan Straits. How Beijing government handles “June 4th” demonstrates its choice between freedom, democracy and totalitarian rule. It influences the Taiwan people's attitude towards China. Two years ago, in his memorial statement dedicated to “June 4th”, Mr. Ma Ying-Jeou had a comment: “’June 4th’ must be redressed. This must be an important indicator of the success of democratization in the mainland, and the political integration across Taiwan Strait.” For many people in Taiwan, the problem of cross-Strait standoff is not DDP, not pro-independence in Taiwan. The real core of the problem, which the leaders in Beijing are fully aware of, is the progress of is the process of democratization in China itself. As a result, “June 4th” is an unforgettable daily indicator for the people.
We had witnessed the systemic corruption of health caused by the attempt to covering up the wound. The bloody incident of February 28th was concealed by the KMT for 40 years. During the four decades, the victim families have no places to express their grievance; the exiles have no relief for their sufferings; hatred was intensified because of intentional cover-up; the forty years later, while the KMT thus lost power, the people was tortured, and torn apart by the accumulated hatred and suffering.
The open wound of “June 4th” has been covered up for 15 years. Is there a race against time to open the lid, and heal it with tender? Or should it be covered continuously, and fester in silence?
