Failing Fuel Injector Symptoms

Fuel injectors replaced the carburetor in newer vehicles as a means of supplying gas to the engine. Using pressure, the fuel injector injects pressurized gas into the intake manifold, where it is then sucked into the engine to create power for the vehicle. When the injector is failing, fuel does not reach the engine and vehicle performance can suffer.
- Cars can have a hard time maintaining a smooth balanced idle. Cars with severely clogged injectors might need the driver to continually press the gas pedal to ensure the car remains running.
- Deposits from fuel can build up inside the injector overtime. These deposits can eventually block the flow of the fuel exiting the injector.
- Fuel injector issues can appear to come and go as deposits are redistributed. Fuel injector cleaner can be added to the gas tank. The cleaner can remove minor deposits within the injector.
- Many newer vehicles have sensors that will alert the driver. If the check engine light illuminates, it is important to take the vehicle to a certified mechanic.Image by Flickr.com, courtesy of Harry Heng
- A leaking fuel injector often smells of gas. If gas is smelled, it is important to visit a mechanic.
- Missing or loose spark plug wires, low fuel pump pressure or volume, clogged fuel filter and an obstructed air filter can present similar issues.
