We attended the Kindergarten reading night last week. Here are some lists from K-teacher:

(1) Readiness with oral and written language
(2) Fine motor
(3) Math
(4) Social and self help skill

Need to practice:
(1) Order food from cafe
(2) talk about schoo and teacher in a positve way
(3) Not to be too slow
(4) Go to bathroom alone

Oral language
Beginning kindergarteners should:
1. listen without interuptions (to stories, teachers, peers, ect.)
2. Identify common objects
3. Speak clearly/understandably
4. Follow simple (2 steps) direction
5. Communicate wants and needs with words. (May I have/do ... Can you help me...)

Written Language and Fine Motor Skills

1.       Use pictures, scribbles, symbols and letters. This shows a sense of language and K readiness

2.       Attempt to draw and color neatly and with details.

3.       Working on DRAWING proper people in a setting is so important now (with more details).

4.       Start to write some sentence.

5.       Critical thinking: What do you think  …/ Is it right that …

 

Reading and Language

1.       Be exposed to a variety of texts (books, magazines, newspapers, menus, shopping lists, ect.)

2.       Create story orally based on pictures. Read clues from pictures.   

3.       Be exposed to “math” through stories, experiences, dramatic play and more.

 
Self-help and social skills

1.       Take care of own toileting needs

2.       Dress self (sweaters, shoes, ect.)

3.       Try now to learn to tie (or use Velcro)

4.       Know Personal information for safety.

5.       Share

6.       Take turns

7.       Respect other’s property

8.       Follow directions/respect authority

9.       Use words to communicate wants and needs (no more pointing for needs)

What can you help at home?

1.       Discuss stories: characters, setting, problems, solution (use character’s name, home fun)

2.       Work on manners, social and self help skills

5 Big ideas

1.       Phonics: letter sounds

2.       Phonic Awareness: Being able to manipulate and use those sounds as a developing reader

3.       Vocabulary: Word work.. leaning new words and using them in writing and speaking

4.       Fluency: Reading with ease and expression: Not having to stop to sound out and re-read words

5.       Comprehension: Understanding and being able to talk and write about what you’ve read

 

Getting information before K:

1.       Check kid’s school’s website

2.       Check teacher’s webpage (weekly, for schedule and learning object, and needs from home)

3.       Open house us a meet and greet. More information will come home day 1!

4.       Read everything that comes home in the folder
