怎么我的感觉跟你不一样呀。志愿者有时比正式职工更努力更听话,因为双方都知道他们有求于教授,或者想进来,或者需要很好的推荐信。
Yes, this is from the volunteer's perspective.
From 教授's perspective, it will be different. They need weigh both the pros (volunteers usually are motivated) and cons (lack of control to volunteers). Some people are more willing to pay a small amount of money to have a monetary bond. This is like using an open source software without warrant vs a commercial software with customer service.
上个月发现了您的大作,一口气看下来,现在每天等不及看新的一章。Very nostalgic indeed - reminds me how we were when we first came here... the furniture from sidewalk, the rundown apartments, the Chinese restaurant jobs, the visa problems, the first real job... 很真实。 Thanks for taking the time to write, please keep it up...
大教授也觉得占人家便宜不公平
Not sure about this. I do see quite a few people start by doing volunteers in big labs.
But volunteers and employees are totally two different relatioships. Basically, you can't rely on volunteers or blame them when things go wrong or when they are lazy, because they are not your employees. But by paying money, you are the employer, the boss, and you have control.
I think 杨小静 will do well. She is smart, but she was not confident. If I remember correctly she didn't do so well in China because of two reasons. First of all, her mom didn't let her study hard due to her physical condition; secondly, Chinese education system. Now she has a clear goal and motivation and right material. Plus she has gone through the tough physical training from working in the restaurant.

杨小静 works hard and has high EQ. She's smart and adaptive, but didn't know her own potential. I think she can do well in this position. After all, it doesn't require a lot of skills to be a technician in a biology lab.
However, it is truly a miracle for someone without any background to get a paid job when competing with some many more experienced applicants. A bottle of reagents in a biology lab can cost thousands of dollars and can be easily wasted by a person with no experience. Even if he may weigh other merits heavier than experience, 巴特曼seems to be too generous on this. Many biology professors are very practical.
Before the chapter 100, the novel is good. Now it doesn't seem to be right. It is true that it is easy for a pretty girl to get job even if she doesn't know enough. But that makes no sense to let her get a job which she knows NOTHING about. That is a bad part of this book - seriously. Besides, working in a restaurant probably won't dramatically change a girl so much.
