The Morning, Long After

The morning, long after
I woke in yawn to your body
for I had been used to
as I should

all around us black roses had never awaken
only the rims of leaves bathed in the golden light
your breath calm as your back against my arm
your eyes sleeping

smell of frost
in early fall

The Morning   by W.S Merwin: Flower & Hand, 1997

The first morning
I woke in surprise to your body
for I had been dreaming of
as I do

all around us white petals had never slept
leaves touched the early light
your breath warm as your skin on my neck
your eyes opening

smell of dew
