Art doesn't have to visually pleasing.
In fact this painting wasn't meant to be visually pleasant and beautiful at all. I do suspect it was intended to show off the artist's technique ( Nowadays not many people can paint a glass and make it look like a glass!).
I actually find the dull, cold, plain,static, painful inaction atmosphere from the painting pretty moving.
Art could be a very subjective thing.
That's perhaps one of the reasons why a picture on a piece of cloth that has frame around it could be sold with crazy 8 digits of $$$ amount!

74 x 54" is large for a portrait. Its even more incredibly difficult given how photo-realisticlly-detailed (look the face, the skin) it is.
What's interesting is the scene in the background.
It is a traditional Chinese brush painting image achieved by oil and canvas instead of brush, ink and rice paper! I don't even know how many hours he had spent on this painting. It's incredible.
