17 day trip – day 9
Schonbrun Palace: three out of five
The highlight of today was a tour with a local guide. I visited Schonbrun Palace, the old home of Austria's rulers. No one lives there now, even though there are descendants. They still have to pay full price to visit the palace. Did you know that Austria once had a huge empire? Most of the Austrian empresses had a lot of children. One even gave birth to 29 of them! The palace is very big and fancy. There is a lot of gold plated stuff, and hundreds of pieces of art. One Austrian empress, Maria Teresa, fought a long war with other countries. Eventually, they sent some delegates to negotiate for peace. When the delegates came, they expected that Austria would be very battle weary. Instead, they found a queen who could afford to spend 50 times more than an average Austrian gets in their life, just for one room's decorations! They asked for a room to revise their negotiating strategy. They got one, but the thing is, the Austrians were eavesdropping on them while they talked. Eventually, Maria Teresa got a pretty good deal. Some of the chandeliers have special light bulbs that, from a distance, seem to flicker like real candles. The back is a garden. It has a horse fountain, with a horse rearing on a rock that has water pouring down the front. I think that the sculptor wasn't too good, though. There's no way for the horse to come down because its front feet are over the edge of the rock!
Dinner: two out of five
If you have read my previous reviews, you probably know that I have done many dinner ratings. So I'll keep this short. Dinner was Chinese food, a bit worse than yesterday (sad face!). I ate outside under some umbrellas.
