我多年奋斗的全部意义就这样在一念之间萎缩为一个工具,我的工作也就只剩下了养家糊口一个目的。当然,如果工作做得好,还可以人前显贵,可是我发现我原来不看重高人一头的那种优越感。美国高三学生Missy Franklin 在2012年奥运会上获得她的第一枚游泳金牌之后对着此起彼伏的闪光灯说: "I don't like being up here alone." 我也不喜欢 “being up here alone” 的感觉。
Thanks for sharing Tolstoy's words. The temptations to go lower are always powerful. Scott Peck said that there is both an upward and a downward force in everyone.
I thought "consciousness" was the invention of new age thinkers. Glad to know that it has a longer history.

Read a quote from Tolstoy's Calendar of Wisdom and thought of you.
At the highest level of consciousness, an individual is alone. Such
solitude can seem strange, unusual, even difficult. Foolish people try
to escape it by means of various dissipations in order to get away
from this high point, to some lower point, but wise people remain at
this high point, with the help of prayer.

True. That's one more evidence that ``civilization'' has not done much to elevate human morality.
Then, what kind of ``progress'' have the human race made over whatever-years it has been in existence?
One cannot help despairing and maybe that's why Leonard Cohen's song ``Hallelujah'' strikes accord with so many hearts--``Even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the Lord of Song, with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah.''

Applaud! You are a unique human being and don't need to apologize for being yourself.
And you don't have to be bound by what you once said, either, as ``foolish consistency
is the hobgoblin of little minds.''

You think ``being down there'' would avoid ``being alone?'' No. You are alone anywhere.
There's no way to get around it.
So I'd say ``face it,''``deal with it,'' and ``embrace it'' for it's a stage of your searching for Truth/God.
BTW, you might enjoy ``Dr. Martin,'' a British comedy, if you haven't already.

That's good! Congratulations. Hope you lose your ``self'' because of this revelation.
