Morro Bay

Morro Bay is the small fishing town I stayed on my trip to Hearst Castle. It has a big Morro Rock, which is the seventh in a chain of volcanic peaks called the "Seven Sisters" along the Highway 1. I chose to stay over there because it is near the ocean and it is 30 miles to the Heart Castle, seems has lots of restaurants and hotels. San Simeon does not look like there is lot of things you can do over there.

The small hotel I stayed is owned by an Indian couple. They told me they are originally from San Jose. I asked them how is the life in Morro Bay, they said "it has never been so much better!". Looks like they really enjoyed it. After check in, I started driving around the town. I got a small local map from the hotel, asked the owner where to find good food, then I headed off to the beach. It has lots of quaint shops on the beach, and, since it is a fishing town, I saw lots of fishing boat. The owner recommended Dockside, who also does its own fishing, of course, they have the freshest seafood.

I drove along the beaches, up and down the street, picked up a few things at the visitor center. I like this place, the house looks small and cozy. Ocean front, what do you expect? There is one Albertsons in town, there is also a clinic. At least there is some support for this town.

After my driving, I arrived at Dockside. I ordered barbecue oyster and Rockefeller oyster. I read Yelp before I went, lots of people mentioned it. The waiter I had talked to me, if you eat in the restaurant, I have to order half dozen, if I order at Dockside 2, which is outdoor dining, I can order it each individually. Why he is talking to me like that? It is just an appetizer. He offered half dozen, 3 barbecue and 3 Rockefeller, ok, sounds good to me. I also want to try their clam chowder. I asked the waiter which one to order, the cup, bowl, bread bowl, or small cup with a small salad. He recommend the small cup with the small salad, he said their cilantro dressing is pretty amazing too.

You know what, only after I start eating, I understood why he questioned me at the beginning, there is so much stuff in that Rockefeller oyster, I finished 2 of them and I can not eat anymore. But I managed to eat 2 more barbeque oyster, a small cup of clam chowder and a small salad, with some bread and relish. The waiter joked with me he can only eat 3 of those Rockefeller oyster, and nothing else. And I did pretty good! Haha, does that mean I am a big eater? By the way, the clam chowder is really good too.

I ate my dinner, read my maps, enjoyed the wonderful ocean view and had a plan for tomorrow. It feels good to be on vacation and be away from everything.
