When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
Yeats)的这首《当你老了》(When You Are Old),还是多年前,在大学的时候。 叶芝在诗中深情地写道:“How many loved your moments of glad grace,And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,And loved the sorrows of your changing face;How many loved your moments of glad grace, but one man loved the pilgrim soul in you."
叶芝,这位20世纪爱尔兰诗人,“以其高度艺术化且洋溢着灵感的诗作表达了整个民族的灵魂”( "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation."
