This was the first time for me to attend a running event since
coming to US. My calves were still sore from Saturday's
11-mile run and I planned to take it easy. It was the first time
for my 8-yr-old, too. He was mainly keen on the medal and
the bragging right among his fellow 2nd-graders.
I tried to count the number of people who ran barefoot. One
was a barefoot runner if he/she ran with naked feet or in
socks, huaraches, Vibram five-fingers, racing flats, or other
sandal-like footwear. Throughout the race, I saw exactly one
such runner, a white-haired guy. I should've asked for his
name. He looked at least in his 60s and maybe even older
than barefoot Ken Bob. He wore even less shoe than I did.
Close to the end of the race he went naked, carrying his
clothes toward the finish line! I definitely was not ready to
go that far ;-)
Overall impression was good. The race was well organized
from start to finish. Most runners were in costumes and the
cheering crowds were amazing. Everything reminded me
more of a giant Halloween party than a foot race. We joined
corral E (11-12min/mile group) at Howard and Stuart, waited
about an hour, paraded the course, smelled much marijuana
in the air, got our medals at the finish, and took the MUNI back.
