My friend's son got accepted into Harvard this year, they are first generation chinese. same as Mrs. Santa's comments, the mom didn't spend much on the tutor class or other kind of outside school class at all. But the child has strong leadership he fully take advantage of the school resources. He even got full scholarship because the family is not wealthy. I think the true potential leader they are looking for is not how much parents invest on them how many classes the parents registered for them
Thank you so much for writing this. I totally agree with everything you said. You grasp the most important point why we need to speak up. It is OK for Harvard to take race into consideration, but it is NOT OK to have a racial quota. Just like Clinton was impeached, not because he had an affair, but because he lied about it.
I am quite upset that some of the most brilliant Asian kids were rejected because they were all alike. Think about it, no one can escape their culture background. But if you look at some other groups, you can also say they are all alike (i.e. first generation college). Why is it OK to label one minority and will cause outcry if anyone dared to say this to others?
The Asian discrimination is something everyone knows but won't talk about. This should not go on.

From NYTimes : "...Even leaving aside the disturbing parallel with how Jews were characterized, there is little evidence that this is true. A new study of over 100,000 applicants to the University of California, Los Angeles, found no significant correlation between race and extracurricular achievements.
The truth is not that Asians have fewer distinguishing qualities than whites; it’s that — because of a longstanding depiction of Asians as featureless or even interchangeable — they are more likely to be perceived as lacking in individuality...."

看看这位前“藤校招生办“的人怎么说:
...the former associate dean of admissions at the University of Pennsylvania and the former dean of admissions and financial aid at Franklin & Marshall College — writes that there is always a reason for a college applicant's rejection. In many cases, students are denied admission because they don't have a "tag" associated with their application — what Harberson calls "the proverbial golden ticket for a student applying to an elite institution."
Students with tags may be "recruited athletes, children of alumni, children of donors or potential donors, or students who are connected to the well connected," according to the former admissions dean. However, Harberson writes, "Asian American students typically don't have these tags." As she notes:
Asian Americans are rarely children of alumni at the Ivies, for example. There aren't as many recruited athletes coming from the Asian American applicant pool. Nor are they typically earmarked as "actual" or "potential" donors. They simply don't have long-standing connections to these institutions.
