既然这个坛无腾不欢，每贴必藤，那就说说哈弗大学的案子。

哈弗请了一个叫 David Card 的Cal 经济学教授，审查了6年的admissions data, 搞了个数学模型，然后写了个expert report，卡德教授结论：没有种族歧视。

原告SFFA 请了一个叫 Peter Arcidiacono 的Duke 经济学教授，审查了这6年的admissions data, 搞了个数学模型，然后写了个expert report，阿奇教授结论：哈弗大学的对申请人的 personal rating is biased. The disparity is striking. For example, Asian-American applicants in the top academic decile are less likely to receive a high personal-rating score than white applicants in the top 50%. 而且奇怪的是这样的 remarkable racial disparity does not appear in the personal ratings given by alumni who actually interview applicants. 阿奇教授的数学模型包括一下这几个参数：academic performance, extracurricular activity, teacher and school-counselor recommendations, and alumni-interview ratings。 阿奇教授的最后结论：毫无疑问，哈弗是歧视亚裔的。

听到了风声，说我们反正也是无聊，就把这两份拿来看看评评，看哪个有礼。

教授们于是也写了一份报告，说：卡德教授的数学模型是有缺点的， 阿奇教授的数学模型是合理（sound)的。卡德虽然自己都承认“it is a well-accepted practice to exclude variables from a regression model that may themselves be directly influenced by the variable of interest (here, race).” 但是他还是把那个personal rating 搞到模型里。

那么这个personal rating 到底是不是biased?

阿奇教授的又一个模型说：除了race, 根本不能解释亚裔学生的低分。打分1-6分，亚裔如果和白孩子同样标准，得1-2分的机会会增加至少20%。

卡德教授对亚裔的personal rating 低分的解释是：不是种族原因，是未知原因。未知原因是什么？有可能是applicant’s personal essay， support letters “from figures like research supervisors or extracurricular instructors，也有可能是differences in unobservable factors! 另外卡德教授对为啥校友打分和校方打分差别那么大的解释是：校友打分不是统一标准的打分。

教授们的结论：Harvard’s personal-rating scores are biased against Asian Americans。
