I liked this movie but it is probably not for 'everyone'. First of all, the description is skewed. By reading that I thought it was going to be an action movie. This movie is not 'riveting right up to the very end'. It is a very slow-paced movie about 3 men who went to high school together and how later in life their lives are boring & detached from others. The part of Sharon Stone as a bored housewife is actually a small part and is only there as a part of the picture/reality of one of the mens' life (Timothy Hutton). If you like deep and emotional movies then this is for you.
But it's not a 'thriller' nor is it 'riveting'. It's deep (intense?), slow (boring/mundane?), psychological (mental/depression/guilt/loneliness/selfishness). I know the way I described it makes it sound like I didn't like the movie..
But I did like it. I'm just giving an honest synopsis It was very well acted by well known actors. It was very well written allowing the viewer to gain in-depth insight with only a span of about a week or two in the life of the characters.?
This movie was originally to have been titled: "When a Man Falls in the Forest", and IMO that title should have remained. It is much more descriptive of this movie, as the movie is basically about people who have struggled and failed; or perhaps merely didn't have the sort of a life that they had previously thought they would. None of them are entirely content with their somewhat "mundane" lives....but each seems to have adapted to it as their "norm", and they either don't know how to change their circumstances, or are not certain that the effort of change is the way to go either. This movie is primarily a study of the "human condition". If you are detail oriented and able to absorb the nuances of the movie, you might enjoy it....especially if you posses an ability to empathize with the characters. It's the type of movie that you will contemplate and process about later on. If that sort of a thinking process is not your preference in entertainment, or you have a short attention span and dig blood, guts, and action sorts of flicks...……...you probably won't like this film. At all.?
Thank you for sharing this heart touching movie. How one man has locked him self in because he avoids conflict ends up unlocking two other men. Very touching. I can relate to Hutton’s character.?
I actually enjoyed this movie. I like movies where you get to know the hidden, strange, quirky sides of the characters. It's like a unique commonality that we all share. Like a thread that connects each of our fabrics together.?
This movie might have been boring to a few people though it's slow it left a good message. The husband was trying to save his marriage left spoken his heart out to his wife on her voicemail box. Instead of listening to it she deleted it out of ignorance. Before that talked about living apart which the husband was in shock about. I won't say the spoiler but now the wife obviously regretted her actions that life threw her an unpredictable curve ball. He also gave some great wisdom to the men too. Good movie.
