Stunning performance. I am old enought to remember when the UK joined the Common Market. They foresook importing dairy, beef and lamb products from Australia and NZ at the behest of Brussels. Thousands here were put out of work and herds were slaughtered. And the thing is, the UK exported more of that value to us in manufactured goods. So that stopped. We sold our dairy and meat products to Asia instead. Since then, 50 years of it, the UK has had a deficit balance of trade with the EU every year.
It was a cluster fuck and still is. Brexit had to happen. Then Mrs May and her trade committee came here for a round of talks after the G20 meetings, to incease trade to cushion the effect of Brexit. So there they were down in Canberra over a weekend. It broke into submeetings and I was in the one about primary produce. He who shall not be named, Permanent Secretary of the Dept and Primary Industry, who had seen nine Prime Ministers come and go asked for a moment to have a say.
He stood up and looked around the table and said that in the 60s when UK joined the Common Market, dairy and beef products exported to the UK were slashed. His father was a diary farmer from Bega and he hanged himself in the barn. There was this silence and he excused himself. The heads of the UK team were struck dumb. My boss said, "you screwed us then but you will not screw us now. So this movie is about all that and AH performance is outstanding.
At 46:24 the machine he is using to slice the swedes for the cows is exactly like the one me and my sister used to use when we went to the neighbouring farm to help with the cows. I grew up in North Wales in the 1960s. I was too young at the time to follow the politics and it was all sheep farming round us anyway. the farmers just kept a few cows for themselves. I felt there was something very wrong about the whole common market idea, but couldn't grasp why the politicians would do something so against our own interests. This sadly is an old old story now, nobody can care more for the land and animals than those who live with it intimately to make a living off it. Banks and corporations only care about figures and balances, savings of scale, so that we now have food that poisons us, land ravished and polluted............. If I was god I would be of a mind to destroy humanity right now...........we deserve it. Though we may just do that to ourselves the way we're going.?
Cracking movie . Shame it is all so true the common market was forced upon all in the uk, We didn't get a choice, We was forced into this by our English, Scottish, Welsh & NI. Governments, Not just one all of them & we the little people have paid for their mistakes year after year while the fat b@stards got fatter off the backs of real working Men & Women, This happened to so many farmers & their families who spent generations working these lands, Shame On Every One Of You Heartless B@stards!!
