Route 1 in Maine is certainly not pretty even though it follows the coastline. You actually rarely see the ocean since coastline is not staring but winding . On the other hand, you can see how poor the communities are. Abandoned farm houses, litters along the road. Ever since I-95 was built, route 1 lost it's old connection function and communities it passed crumbled.

1 north on the east coast is up to Canada, almost reaching Prince Edward island.
When I lived in Maine, I once tried to drive on route 1 entirely up north from Boston. It took probably 2 or 3 times more compared to I-95 since route 1 followed the coastline and it is not a straight line. I got lost twice and had to stopped at local town for directions. When I entered the diner and all people inside turned at the same time and looked at me as if I was an alien. I guess they were surprised to see me there.
