A group of allied commandos, led by Robert Shaw, infiltrate Yugoslavia on a secret mission against the Thrid Reich. Their orders: blow a giant dam in order to crush a strategic bridge held by the Nazis. Picture is filled with action, intrigue and double-crosses.
Such a great movie. Some of the actors,( Harrison Ford, Carl Weathers) before they were more familiar. I always liked these, clandestine, cloak and dagger type movies. This one, "Where Eagles Dare" and "Guns of Navarone". I didn't know, Robert Shaw passed away, shortly after this came out?
I'll admit I've only seen Shaw in Jaws and The Sting. Both characters were mean and criminal. This film gives a completely different perspective to his versatility. This movie is great!
What legendary actors!!! U got Shaw a legend from " Jaws" + u got the giant " Jaws" from the Bond movies- & Barbara Bach the Bond girl ..Ringo married her!!! + u got Apollo Creed & Han Solo !!! Wow
Love this movie, this is one of my favorites, I met Richard Kiel at a Creation Convention at the Jack Tar Hotel in San Francisco. sometime in the 80's. A great place for conventions. I was so sad when it closed. What a sweet delightful man he was. Did not charge for an autograph, took time to answer his fans questions, very down to earth and friendly. He said he really liked the character he played in Force 10. For all who think this movie was before Ford was famous , , well this movie came out in 1978 , Star Wars was first released in San Francisco May 25th 1977, Ford was already a household name by 1978. Lucas later re released Star Wars in 1981 after cleaning up audio and adding some footage etc, I love reading the comments below and know that there are so many that think this as a very good film too ,
This is in memory of a charming old man who used to live in my street; he was a French speaker, but was from one of those exotic French islands somewhere like the Indian Ocean, and in his heavily accented English he would always say to me, "Greece, beautiful music ! Beautiful music ! Guns of Navarone, beautiful singing !". He would then hum this tune to me, and always asked me if I could get it for him. Well it was in the days before Internet, so it took me a couple of years, but I eventually found this song on a Greek Folk Songs CD, and it was just wonderful to see the delighted expression on his face when I presented it to him !
