But Why did they pick September? why not November?
"I guess I felt that September is a time of passage from the romanticism of youth to realism. One moves from the over-statement of summer to the clarity of winter. I wouldn't be a youthful, romantic person again for anything in the whole wide world."
Oh, Tom.
"Try to Remember" still has a remarkable way of capturing a sense of sadness, lost innocence and rue. Its obliqueness adds dignity; its sweetness suggests a certain guilelessness; and its directness goes right to the heart.
On this day of all days, it offers a little balm. And, in its last two words (which are repeated like an echo), even a note of hope:
Deep in December it's nice to remember
the fire of September that made us mellow
Deep in December our hearts should remember
And follow . . . follow . . . follow . . . follow . . .
Try to remember
Try to remember the kind of September, When life was slow and oh so mellow. Try to remember the kind of September, When grass was green and grain was yellow. Try to remember the kind of September, When you were a tender and callow fellow. Try to remember, and if you remember, Then follow (follow) follow (follow) follow Try to remember when life was so tender, That no one wept except the willow, Try to remember when life was so tender, That dreams were kept beside your pillow. Try to remember when life was so tender, That love was an ember about to billow, Try to remember, and if you remember, Then follow (follow) follow (Follow, deep in December it's nice to remember, Although you know the snow will follow. Deep in December it's nice to remember, Without a hurt the heart is hollow.) Deep in December it's nice to remember, The fire of September that made us mellow. Deep in December our heart's should remember, And follow (follow) follow (follow) follow
