In Memory of Xu Liu | TED talk - How to manually change a memory

Liu,Xu passed away 7 years at the age of 37. He was a talented scientist and employed as a postdoctoral associate in the Nobel Prize laureate Susumu Tonegawa's lab. He relocated to Chicago to join Northwestern University's Department of Neurobiology as an Assistant Professor.

His collaboration with MIT graduate student Steve Ramirez was recognized by a 2014 Smithsonian Ingenuity Award in Natural Sciences. Xu and Steve’s groundbreaking research documented the ability to not only artificially reactivate specific memories in the brain, but also to create false memories. Using optogenetics and lab mice, the two scientists manipulated cells that are activated during formation of fear memories to implant a new memory of an event that never happened.

The team’s TED talks regarding this work have generated nearly one million views. This video added Chinese subtitles. https://youtu.be/ziv4Ju8mO_A
