Foreword

Discipline, morality, and important social norms must actively be passed on from generation to generation for our societies to maintain a cohesive culture and identity. However, almost no one enjoys being lectured on these topics. With that said, almost everyone can appreciate a good story, so my goal is to translate a set of commonly known fables within China with for teachers and parents around the world to share with their children.

In the context of a story, a child can live vicariously through the characters and simultaneously enjoy the narrative while learning the morals woven throughout it. I dare to speak so authoritatively on this matter because my experience as a young child who has recently grown up provides me with insight and recency that are highly relevant. In other words, this book is for me, and I wish to someday tell my children and grandchildren these ancient Chinese stories, along with the ones by Aesop and Grimm.

These stories are now regarded in China as fables, commonly known as the Fables of the Scholars. I chose ten of the most famous that can guide our own behavior in life even to this day and made this picture book. I hope that children all over the world can learn about these ancient Chinese fables. Reader, we must recognize that culture knows no borders or even eras. I hope that these fables from more than two thousand years ago can bring happiness—and wisdom— to you now.
