Master's Gem 1 (Just Flow)

Master Rickson Gracie taught in a video the idea of flow in jiu-jitsu training,

which is the best I've seen so far and I've transcribed below. (Neither of us is

a native English speaker. We do our best.)

At the end of the day, what you want is you educate your reflexes to respond

accordingly. So it's no strategy, no mental, when you fight. It's just flow.

In order for you to flow, you have to be comfortable with, e.g., from the

attempt of a sweep, he doesn't fall, you go back to the armlock. You have to

drill this slowly and start to educate yourself.

Every time you go to spar, don't focus yourself on results, on the outcome of

the fight, just think about being relaxed, being comfortable, try to feel what

your opponent is doing and try to seek positions he leaves open. It's just a

flow and it's something you cannot put too much in your mind, expectations,

frustrations. So be comfortable, be calm. If you miss it this time, you are

going to get it another time. And years and years of practice will give you

the sense that you don't have to think about anything. You just have to obey

  the flow.
