瞿塘嘈嘈十二滩，此中道路古来难。

长恨人心不如水，等闲平地起波澜。

(Song of Bamboo Branch)

 

The Qutang Gorge boasts of twelve rapids that loud roar,

Which hath been the most perilous since days of yore.

I sigh man's heart less tractable than the rapids,

Upon the calm plains it can stir billows galore.
