potatoes do not block calcium absorption. However, potatoes are not a significant source of calcium or vitamin D, which are important for bone health.

Some foods that can block calcium absorption include:
  • Foods with oxalates: Oxalates bind with calcium in the same food, preventing the body from absorbing the calcium. Foods with oxalates include spinach, rhubarb, and sweet potatoes.

  • Foods with phytates: Phytates are found in whole grains, legumes, nuts, and soy products, and bind calcium in other foods. However, cooking phytate-containing foods can reduce their phytic acid content and make the nutrients more bioavailable.

  • Caffeine and phosphorus: These can reduce calcium absorption.

  • Alcohol: Alcohol can interfere with the pancreas and liver, which are needed to activate and absorb calcium.

  • Salty foods: Excessively salty foods can leach calcium from the body.
