I live in a residence for senior adults and the disabled. We have numerous food programs including food stamps, food banks and a very low priced lunch at the senior center.
In spite of this a decent number of people claim they don’t have enough to eat. Upon further examination all of are found to spend large amounts of their SS checks on cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. The major offenders are smokers. Without these addictions they would be eating just fine. The last week of the month several of them wander around trying to bum cigarettes from anyone who passes by. It is sad to see people in their 60’s and 70’s totally enslaved to their addictions.

24.6%”。“Between December 2021 and December 2022, the share of adults reporting food insecurity in the last year increased from 20 percent to 24.6 percent.”
