National debt under President Joe Biden
A good chunk of the nearly $6.7 trillion in national debt accumulated during the Biden administration so far can be attributed to the American Rescue Plan, which provided economic relief in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
During Biden’s term, Congress voted to suspend the debt ceiling, which was previously set at $31.4 trillion, through January 2025.
National debt under former President Donald Trump
The national debt grew by more than $8.1 trillion during Donald Trump’s presidency, the largest four-year increase in the nation’s history.
More than 40% of the debt is a result of coronavirus relief bills passed by Congress. However, another major contributor is the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, the largest tax reform bill in nearly three decades.
National debt under former President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama incurred more debt than any other president, adding more than $8.3 trillion to the balance sheet over eight years. The administration nearly doubled the total amount owed by the federal government.
Much of the administration’s debt can be attributed to stimulus spending to combat the Great Recession, along with making certain Bush-era tax cuts permanent.
National debt under former President George W. Bush
President George W. Bush was the first president to add a multi-trillion-dollar amount to the debt, primarily to finance the war on terror and to provide sweeping tax cuts.

"It would’ve been good to know that before I had all my money frozen, put on a no-fly list, banned from everything, lost all my bank and payment processing.”
