First of all. I am a super fan of Lin. I watched Sunday's game, yelled, jumped because of him. So I don't love him any less than any of the anygry fans down there.
Secondly, I really think the author does have his point. The current system in China won't make another Lin from mainland, let alone Taiwan. You can name bunch of names of world champions from China against author's point. But I think you need to see how those champs got to where they were. Li Na, she broke up with the system and made much bigger sucess after that. All those Olympic Champs, they were locked up in the system having endless training just for the purpose of winning golds. To be honest, I feel bad for them, being a machine with a sole purpose of winning glory for the country.NBA league is a brutal place. It takes much more than endless training to survive. You might say how about Yao. Don't forget Yao has his advantage that others don't, his height. Let's say if Lin is in China, only 1.91m, he wouldn't be given the chance to get to where Lin was before he joined NBA. In China, first, he would not be recurited into the state sport teams, then that's it for him. But in US, he could just play in highschool, then college, then NBA. Nothing ever stopped him from doing what he loves. He just needed to be discovered. Now he is.
