Nightly,

@cheng, i understood your post just fine when referring to 'religion being a source of humility and confidence...' but you nitpicked confidence and left out humility in my original statement. you do realize painting broad strokes about religious folks being more humble and virtuous than nonbelievers is itself an overt religious bigotry right? to say nothing of your purile inference of my not believing in a higher power which i do by the way, just not the white-washed, renaissance version
@nightly,
你中文学好点再批评。你整个没看懂。
I was saying you can't say there is no GOD. I did not even argue where the confidence come from. People believing in GOD is no better than others but at lease they know that. That's what I mean.
Smoke and mirrors: 不应翻译成"烟和镜", 应是"现实与假像". 看如下解释. 文章写得很好, 翻译也很棒.
Smoke and mirrors is a metaphor for a deceptive, fraudulent or insubstantial explanation or description. The source of the name is based on magicians' illusions, where magicians make objects appear or disappear by extending or retracting mirrors amid a distracting burst of smoke. The expression may have a connotation of virtuosity or cleverness in carrying out such a deception.
In the field of computer programming, it is used to describe a program or functionality that does not yet exist, but appears as though it does (cf. vaporware). This is often done to demonstrate what a resulting project will function/look like after the code is complete — at a trade show, for example.
More generally, "smoke and mirrors" may refer to any sort of presentation by which the audience is intended to be deceived, such as an attempt to fool a prospective client into thinking that one has capabilities necessary to deliver a product in question.

@cheng, patriotic pride isn't limited to ethnic chinese. ever heard of merica exceptionalism? or tiger mom's self-promoting book on how chinese style parenting is superior to the west? we all like to accentuate our best qualities and downplay less-attractive traits, not to mention anonimity of the interweb can bring out the worst in us. to the extent that superiority often masks underlying inferiority you are correct in pointing out that we need to bolster a sense of self-esteem. the case for religion being the source of humility and confidence is a ridiculous absolute though. Hitler is a devout roman catholic. white suprematists in the states also tend to be deelply religious. just a few example.
