Xi knew it darn well that an attack on Taiwan would mark the beginning of the end to his totalitarian regime. Quite frankly, the US hawks are waiting for an opportunity to escalate the showdown with China. They need this to galvanize the nation. To Xi, this is the last thing he wants to see.
