2005 National Bike Summit Accelerates Bicycling Agenda

The 5th National Bike Summit, March 16-18 in Washington, D.C. was a resounding success. More than 325 participants from 47 states visited the offices of more than 310 U.S. Representatives and 90 U.S. Senators on Capitol Hill day, March 17.

Keynote speakers included The Honorable Norman J. Mineta, Secretary of Transportation; Ms. Elizabeth Mabry, executive director of the South Carolina Department of Transportation; and Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR).

Senator John Kerry (D-MA) received a National Bicycle Leadership Award at a congressional reception, March 17th. The award recognized his role in raising awareness of bicycling and his personal commitment to enjoying the benefits of bicycling even during his grueling Presidential campaign. Awards were also presented to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), the Palmetto Cycling Coalition in South Carolina, and Pat Cunnane, president of Fuji Bicycles.
