Internet Addiction--- assignment 1

Addiction is a situation that someone compulsively does something that one is abnormally dependent on. For instance, alcoholics are people who are addicted to alcohol.

The reason people are addicted to something that seemingly hurts their bodies or health mainly lies in the physical and mental enjoyment the activity brings. How do people become addicted? At the beginning, people may only be interested in or want to try something new. The pleasurable feeling prevents people from quitting this activity. People are becoming dependent on it. However, the more and the longer people are involved, the more addictive they become. They will undoubtedly be the slave of the addiction.

Since the internet has been invented, there has emerged a novel kind of addition---- internet addiction. It is hard to quantify how much time one can spend on internet without being addictive. One of the criteria is to see if you feel lonely, fretful and meaningless without them. If you do feel this way, that must be a sign that you are at the brink of addiction.

Addiction is frequently accompanied with negative influences. Children, who are supposed to do their homework or play in the yard after school, could play games through internet hours and hours without eating or drinking. The teenagers and the adults could become immersed in cyber chatting and cyber relationships, which may isolate them from others in real life. If this happens, complaints from family members will be inevitable. How can one expect a happy relationship or even marriage in this case? Do women like their husbands caring for nothing but internet? Moreover, addiction will cause health problems, such as deterioration in eyesight, difficulties and uncontrollable movement, and some addiction related mental illness as well.

People obtain knowledge quickly and efficiently through this modern technology. People are able to find almost everything online. The Internet helps us to know what is happening in other countries all over the world. It makes our daily life much easier and brings fun and happiness to our life. Even housewives can check what will be on sale in grocery stores on the internet. Children can learn drawing and painting online. Businessmen can transact their shares and stocks through the internet. Scientists find more interesting studies online. People should definitely make good use of the internet to refresh their knowledge, to keep them connected with outside world. However, more is not always better. The internet addiction is not much different from alcoholism in terms of damage to people’s mental and physical health, as well as to the family life and society.
