Because you are a deligent bird, a highly educated bird and a learning bird, I'd like to share what I have done with auto AC, in a bird language:))

First, you'll need to find out the cause of failure. It could be any one of those or combined - by faulty AC signal sensing, non-present power to compressor, clutch stuck, or simply freon leaked-out. With a car at 16 years old age, it wouldn't surprise me that either compressor is dead or freon is leaked out due to aging seals/o-rings.

To check the leaking, you would need to have minimum pressure in the system so to allow the compressor to be kicked off. If the clutch doesn't run when AC button was pressed, the clutch is dead, then changing the compressor becomes imminent. If it runs, add a bottle of dye to the system and let the AC run. In a dark night, use a UV light with a pair of UV detecting goggles to see where it's leaking and fix it accordingly.

Replacing a compressor is a tricky thing. The following procedures are from what I did recently. With my fix, on my 300SDL, now the lowest vent temperature measured was 39.4F.

(1) If your AC system has never been opened, recovering the old freon (R12) is mandated by law.
(2) When new or rebuilt compressor was shipped out, there would be lube oil in it. You'll need to drain it first.
(3) Before installing the manifold, add oil (pag or ester per type of freon you are going to use) to the suction port. Slowly turn the clutch so to let oil go inside. Don't over turn it as the oil could come out from expelling port.
(4) Install manifold
(5) Tape (seal) the connection opening (vertical surface).
(6) Install the compressor
(7) If you do flush, this is the time to do it
(8) Connect the hoses
(9) Replace receiver/drier
(10) Recover and vacuum the system for at least 30 minutes to get >29 inHg vacuum right after drier is being installed.
(11) Test leak for 10 minutes (above was done on RobinAir). If still leaks, fix the leak and repeat 9 and 10.
(12) Install fittings. Charge up R134 to manufacturer's specified amount .
(13) Enjoy your cold air.
