作为战俘于战后幸存之澳军“云雀支队”军官
——战时澳军“云雀支队”的命运(续五)
1942年1月23日的亚包之战,澳军仅仅抵抗了几个小时便作鸟兽散。这固然与日军兵力雄厚、陆海空协力有关,但守军战斗意志薄弱、士气低落也是不争的事实。但就澳军而言,更重要的是其军官的指挥无能,导致了亚包要塞甫被攻击,就致崩溃。战后,澳军总部曾有人指出,以如此少量的兵力来防守此一远离澳大利亚本土的前沿阵地,而又没有有效的支援保障,当时就已让人觉得,澳军总部是准备牺牲这1500官兵,放弃这一战略要地了。因此,亚包守备队——“云雀支队”上下对于如何防守该地以及与此相关的预后计划和措施,大都付诸阙如,也就是可以理解的了。
当2月6日,亚包守备队司令官史淦澜上校眼见无法逃出新不列颠岛,而又不愿其部下再次惨遭日军在透尔种植园里对病饿交加的澳军集体屠杀的事情发生,出面接洽日军,表示投降,并下令所有无法逃出的澳军投降之后,先后有1050多名澳军官兵陆续向日军投降,包括上述在透尔种植园中被日军集体屠杀的120名澳军官兵,他们被关进了亚包战俘集中营。颇具讽刺意义的是,关押这些澳军战俘的集中营,恰恰就是先前防备亚包的“云雀支队”主力第22步兵营在亚包港附近的麻辣古辣(Malaguna)兵营。当然,日本人对欧美官兵的阶级概念也还是有些了解的,即便都是战俘,日本人还是将这些为数达50多名的澳军军官与850多名士兵隔离开来,分营而居。
而恰恰是这一分营而居,使这些澳军军官避免了与其士兵同船而被美军潜艇击沉的命运。当那些“云雀支队”的澳军大兵于1942年6月22日被日军装上运输舰“蒙得维的亚丸”号,准备将其运往中国的海南岛做苦工时,这些澳军军官,包括澳军战地救护队的6名女护士,则留在原地未动,直到7月6日,才被赶上另一艘日军辅助舰“鸣丸”号,直接驶往日本,也是做苦工。尤其诡异的是,尽管这些军官中有的人上船前就病得很厉害,途中卫生环境和航行条件也极差,他们却最终全部抵达日本;而且,他们在日本的三年里,居然无人病死或因遭受虐待而亡,全部都挣扎着活到了1945年8月15日,看到了日军投降,迎来了太平洋战争的胜利。真是福大命大啊。大难不死,必有后福,一点儿也不错。不管你信不信,反正我信了。他们在9月初见证了东京湾的受降仪式之后,也分别于当月就或搭乘飞机、或乘坐军舰,陆续回到了澳大利亚。
下面就是这57名战后幸存之澳军亚包守备队军官的名单。其各级军官的军衔分别为:中校(临时加挂上校衔)一人,少校7人,上尉11人,中尉35人,随军牧师2人,另有一人不具军衔。其排列顺序依次为:兵籍号、军衔、姓名、所属单位;括号中为战后所获勋衔。
