在众多国军将领中，黄百韬算是比较特殊的一个，他早年的时候曾给北洋军阀李纯当传令兵。由于做事勤谨，得到李纯的赏识，被送往金陵军官教导团学习，毕业后回到李纯手下任职。后来张宗昌赶走李纯，占领了江苏。黄百韬又投靠了张宗昌，累积军功升任师长。
