A Couple Came My Home to Teach the Bible

Living in Canada, It seemed the whole world was changed. My life became quieter than in Singapore. I didn’t find a church close to my area. In my office or home, I almost did not have a chance to speak English. I felt alone not because I didn’t have friends around me but because I was worried that I might forget English I learned before. Someone came into my life and broke that silence.

Daniel & Kitty - One day, a couple, Daniel and Kitty, knocked on my door and told me they were Christians and wanted to share the gospel if I wanted. I was excited to welcome them to my home to teach me because I wanted to learn English. Daniel was a pastor. He was a very wise and good-natured young man with pleasant voice handsome brown eyes. Kitty was a Chinese-Canadian and immigrated from Hong Kong to Canada and then married to Daniel. The young lady was very passionate about teaching the Bible. She spoke bilingual languages, Cantonese and English. I didn’t understand Cantonese. Therefore, English became the only tool for us to communicate.

Every Sunday morning, Daniel taught my son, and Kitty taught me. Every time I asked kitty a lot of questions about Jesus. Why did he was so poor and dressed such dirty closing? If he was the son of God, he should look like a gentleman who wore a formal suit. Why did Mary give birth without marrying his father? Virgin could not be pregnant according to science. Until once upon a time, she kept in silence a few minutes; I watched her and noticed her lips still smiled. But, she joked that she had taught one hundred students, and she never met anyone like me. I realized my questions made Kitty feel uncomfortable. I felt guilty because my questions were out of the range of the class topics. I reminded myself this class was not only to practice English but also to learn about the Bible. I should respect Kitty. She spent so much time to come and teach me. She would like to share Jesus' stories with me and did a great job for me. I should be thankful for her dedication rather than making her embarrassed. From then on, I had held my tongue because I didn’t want to make her upset. This tip helped me focus on listening only of the class topics, thinking only of the class topics, and asking only of the class topics.

Daniel told some Bible stories to my son. At that time, my son was 11 years old. Those stories were very new to him. I remembered that the first story Daniel told him was Noah’s Ark and the flood. Even though he didn’t understand the meaning behind this teachable event in the Bible, the story attracted his attention. He remembered that God promised never to destroy the earth with a flood again, and He placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign of his promise. My son even hoped to visit the place where Noah had lived to see Noah’s ark. From then on, he was eager to learn more. Every weekend, he was waiting for Daniel to bring stories to him. He loved Daniel and his stories.

We were going to move to America after one year. Before left Canada, the couple invited us to have dinner with them and gave us encouraging words from Martin Luther King Jr, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” I believe that just because they planted the seeds in our hearts, and eventually, we had become Christians in the future.
