A Verse by Nalan Rongruo (Qing Dynasty)

(To a Bosom Friend)

If life remained unchanged since our first date,

How could fall winds sing dirge to my fan’s fate?

How swiftly this sweet heart can discolour?

Yet it says ‘tis prone to a fickle gait.

Mount Li heard the liege vow at night, though great,

His grief e’en Bell of Rain cannot abate.

This silk-clad wretch, though faithless, outdid thee —

Wing-to-wing, twig-to-twig, an oath of weight.

V2.

This silk-robed wretch, faithless, still outdid thee —

Wing-to-wing, twig-to-twig, a pledge of weight.

V3.

If life remained unchanged since our first date,

How could fall winds lament my hand-fan’s fate?

How swiftly this sweet heart can discolour?

Yet it says ‘tis prone to a fickle gait.

Mount Li heard the liege vow at night, though great,

His grief e’en Bell of Rain cannot abate.

This silk-robed wretch, faithless, still outdid thee —

Wing-to-wing, twig-to-twig, a pledge of weight.

V4.

If life remained unchanged since our first date,

How could fall winds mourn my painted fan’s fate?

How swiftly this sweet heart can discolour?

Yet it says ‘tis prone to a fickle gait.

Mount Li heard the liege vow at night, though great,

His grief e’en Bell of Rain cannot abate.

This silk-robed wretch, faithless, still outdid thee —

Wing-to-wing, twig-to-twig, a pledge of weight.
