Before Putin invaded Ukraine, Xi Jinping was like a bull in a china shop. He openly promised no-limit support for Putin. Now one year later, Putin is in deep shit and that is a wake-up call for the hotheaded Xi. He has to do damage control and extend an olive branch to Europe. Europe is Xi's only hope of avoiding a free fall of his economy.
Apparently Xi didn't understand that Russia's invasion of Ukraine cannot be tolerated by Europe. His alignment with Putin put himself at odds with Europe.

Xi Jinping is now between a rock and a hard place. Facing a hawkish US, Xi cannot afford to alienate Europe. If Europe completely decouples with China, the latter will be dead in the water. Yet, the EU wants to see that China stops supporting Russia that threatens EU. Xi cannot afford to let Russia go either as Putin is the only ally of Xi. If Russia quickly loses war in Ukraine, the picture would change dramatically. It’s entertaining to watch Xi Jinping.
