QinHwang: “Sir, I am going to buy a cotton shit (sheet) for my bed, could you please show me where it is?”
Store manager: “What? Say it again.”
造成原因: 不能正确区分长短 vowel
3. Full
QinHwang: “I ate a lot of fish. I am fool (full) now.”
American colleague: “I thought that eating fish makes people smart.”
造成原因: “u” in “full” should be pronounced ŏŏ as in as in “Book”; instead, it is pronounced as ōō as in Food.
4. Soup
QinHwang: “Mam, may I order a cup of soap (soup)?”
Waitress: “What? We don’t cook soap here.”
造成原因: “ou” in “soup” should be pronounced as long ōō as in “Food”; instead, it is pronounced as long “o” in “Boat”.
5. Mouth
QinHwang: “There is milk in your mouse (mouth).”
American colleague: “I don’t see a mouse in my house.”
造成原因: 不能正确区分 “s” vs. “th” 的发音.
6. Lunch
QinHwang: “I am going to launch (lunch).”
American colleague: “To Moon or Mars?”
造成原因: “u” in “lunch” should be pronounced as ŭ as in “cut”; instead, it is pronounced as “ä” in “Father”.
7. House
QinHwang: “I plan to buy a horse (house.)”
American colleague: “Where do you keep him?”
造成原因: 不能正确发 “ou” as in “loud”
8. Think
QinHwang and his son were swimming in their backyard pool.
QinHwang: “Son, what should we do after this? I am sinking (thinking)….”
Son: “Dad, are you sinking? Mom, help!!!”
造成原因: 不能正确区分 “s” vs. “th” 的发音.
9. Dad
QinHwang was knocking at the door; he left his key in the house.
Son: “Who is this?”
QinHwang: “I am dead (Dad).”
Son: “You are still alive.”
造成原因: Failed to differentiate short vowel “a” as in “Apple” from short vowel “e” as in “bed”
10. Condom
QinHwang: “A company is now making condo (condom) for women’s use only, have you heard of that?”
American colleague: “I thought any type of condos can be used by men and women.”
造成原因: 尾音没有发好.
Condo: condominium, apartment houses which share walls each other.
